No matter what the state of the economy currently is, it important for you to take steps to properly plan out your wedding budget before you get started with the rest of the planning.  After all, you will only have a certain amount of money available for your big day, so you need to be certain there are enough funds to pay for all of the things you most want to be included in your wedding. Therefore, when calculating your wedding budget, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

Paying for the Wedding

Of course, the first thing you need to determine is who is going to pay for the wedding.  Traditionally, the bride’s parents have been the ones left holding the bill.  More recently, however, it has become more common for the groom’s parents to pitch in or even for the couple to pay for their own wedding.  In fact, some experts claim that approximately 4 out of 5 couples cover the expenses on their own.  Whether you are paying for the wedding yourself or you are getting help with the expenses, you need to be clear on how much money is available so you properly plan your budget.

Breaking the Budget Down

After you have determined how much money you have available for your wedding, you next need to decide how much of the budget will be dedicated to certain aspects of your big day.  Some expenses you will need to consider include:

  • Venue costs
  • Catering expenses
  • Wedding clothing
  • Wedding rings
  • Entertainment
  • Transportation
  • Cake
  • Decorations
  • Flowers

By determining how much you can allocate to each area, you will have a better idea of what you can and can’t afford to include in your wedding.  At this point, you can start making some adjustments to your plans.  For example, you may need to forego some of the services you were planning to have or you may need to reduce the number of guests on your lists in order to fit within your budget.  The important thing is to make certain you stay within your budget.  That way, you and your new spouse won’t have to start your marriage off with an overwhelming debt to overcome.
