As you plan for your wedding ceremony and reception, one of the decisions you will have to make is whether you will hire a DJ or band.  And, once you have decided, you need to take steps to make certain the band or DJ is right for you and your special day.  By following these simple tips, you will be certain to choose the right entertainment for your wedding.

Tip #1:  Shop Early

It is best to start shopping around for a DJ or band at least 9 to 18 months before your big day.  This is particularly true if you plan to have your wedding on a Saturday night.  The most popular bands and DJs, which are usually the best bands and DJs, will be booked well in advance.

Tip #2:  Look for Experience

The band or DJ you hire should have a great deal of experience.  It is especially important for the band or DJ to have experience playing at weddings, as this is usually different from a gig at a bar.

Tip #3:  Look at the Song Selection

Obviously, you want an entertainer that can play the type of music you want to listen to.  Ask to see the song list the band or DJ has to offer and look for someone that can offer a versatile selection.  After looking at the list, create a list of songs you want played as well as songs you don’t want to have played at your reception.  In addition, if you are hiring a band, make certain it knows how to play your wedding song.

Tip #4:  Discuss the Breaks

If you are hiring a band, the band will need to take occasional breaks during the night.  Ask the bandleader how long the breaks will be, how long each set will be between breaks, and what will be played during break time. Many bands play taped music during their breaks, but some provide some alternate form of live entertainment instead.

Tip #5:  See the Band for Yourself

Before hiring a band, make sure to see the band perform live.  Seeing a videotaped performance is not the same as watching a live performance.  So, while you might narrow your choices down according to a videotape, don’t make your final decision until you have seen the band live.
