Are you considering hiring a wedding planner to assist with putting your wedding together? If so, you aren’t alone.  A growing number of couples are deciding to turn to wedding planners to help them with planning out the perfect nuptials.  After all, with all of the things that so many of us are trying to juggle in our lives, finding an expert to handle the details can be a major relief.  Besides, wedding planners often have the best connections within the wedding and event planning field.  Not only can this help expand your planning options, it can also ultimately help you obtain better prices on the venues, services and products you decide to purchase for your big day.  But, before you bring a wedding planner on board, there are several things you need to keep in mind to make certain you select the right planner for you.

Here are a few things to look for when selecting a wedding planner.

·    Competence - one of the most important things to look for is someone who is competent in his or her job.  After all, this is one of the most important events in your life, so you want to make certain to work with someone who knows what or she is doing.
·    Trustworthiness - you need to be able to trust that the person is taking care of your wedding arrangements for you.  The last thing you want is to be within days of the big event to only discover that all of the arrangements haven’t been made.
·    Willingness to Listen - this is your special day, not the wedding planner’s opportunity to relive the wedding of his or her dreams.  Therefore, you want to make certain the person you hire is someone who actually listens to you about your needs and desires. This way, you will end up with the wedding of your dreams, not someone else’s idea of what your wedding should look like.
·    Budget-Conscious - while every bride would like to be able to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on her dream wedding, most aren’t able to be so free with their money.  Therefore, be sure to hire someone who is just as concerned about sticking with your budget as you are.
·    Excellent Communication Skills - your wedding planner needs to have excellent communication skills so he or she can share ideas with you while also being open to the ideas you already have.  Look for someone who can effectively communicate with you so you can be sure to explore all of your options with a solid understanding of what each option has to offer.
·    Friendly Yet Firm - your wedding planner will likely be in attendance at your wedding as well at your reception. Therefore, you want someone who is friendly and who won’t embarrass you on your special day.  At the same time, he or she needs to be firm and willing to do what is necessary to make certain everything about your big day goes off without a hitch.

The best way to make certain your wedding planner has these characteristics is to contact his or her references and to check on the experiences of other couples.  Of course, it is also a good idea to sit down and chat with a variety of different wedding planners so you can make certain you feel the right connection with the person you are hiring.  Remember, the bottom line is that you need to feel comfortable with the person you hire, and the only way you can be certain of that is to spend some time getting to know one another.
